Plastic Fish
2017

Plastic Fish is an underwater series that invites viewers into a submerged world of illusion. Radiant fish weave through garlands of flowers, plastic bags shimmer like glass, and colour blooms against deep, blackened waters. At first glance, the scenes appear opulent, even dreamlike. But a quiet unease surfaces through the beauty.

Constructed entirely underwater, these works are both homage and critique. They reference the composition and lighting of Dutch still-life paintings while reframing them through an ecological lens. Beauty here is performative, fleeting, and precarious. The organic and the artificial intermingle until the boundaries blur.

This series is a meditation on fragility: of ecosystems, beauty, and the natural world as it collides with human-made excess. The fish, suspended in plastic or swimming amongst decaying blooms, become symbols of survival, trapped in a cycle of aestheticised consumption. Time slows, as though held in a dream.
